LandM San Manuel Yamaha rider James Stewart is the new leader of the 2009 AMA Supercross series (also an FIM World Championship) after taking his YZ450F to a brilliant seventh consecutive success last Saturday. Round eight of seventeen at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, filled almost to capacity, was the scene of his latest victory and another chapter in the fierce spell of domination he is casting over his peers.

22 years after Bob Hannah won the first an Atlanta SX meeting on a Yamaha, Stewart was again placing a blue machine on the top of the podium. His flight from main rival Chad Reed once more increased his career victory tally to 32 and become the 5th most successful rider in the history of the sport.

"Streaks are always meant to be broken, so I want to make it eight!" said Stewart who equalled his superb run of 7 wins taken in 2007. "I know Chad rides good every weekend, and I always have my hands full, so I'll just go back and prepare. However to come out of Anaheim I 23 points back and now be 3 points in the lead, it definitely feels good."

Thanks to Stewart's increasing total of wins and Josh Grant's maiden triumph, Yamaha remain unbeaten Indoors in 2009. With 8 trophies Yamaha can start to look towards beating their own record of success when in 2000 they accumulated 14 victories.

Grant finished 13th in Atlanta in the wake of his spill and neck injury in San Diego. There was bright news for Yamaha's Broc Hepler, who ran as high as second for a sizeable period of the race before finishing fifth; his best result of the season so far. "I didn't ride that speed all night, so I didn't know whether I could go that speed for 20 laps or not," he said. "I haven't done a 20-lap moto since December. I just slowed it down a little bit because I was making a few mistakes... I just didn't want to be 19th again."

Stewart now leads Reed by 3 points. Round nine takes place next weekend at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

MX-GP: Champion’s performance by Philippaerts at Valence

Two weeks after opening their 2009 motocross calendar with a shakedown meeting at the Starcross International at Mantova, the renamed Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team accelerated their progress and preparations for the upcoming FIM MX1-GP World Championship – in which they will enter as title holders for the fourth time in five years – by celebrating a double podium appearance at the Valence International in central France yesterday.

World Champion David Philippaerts, fresh from his win last week at the opening round of the Italian Championship at Montevarchi, guided his YZ450FM through cold winds and light rain to record results of 1st, 1st and 2nd in the three French motos and claim the overall top step. Josh Coppins was also looking strong. The Kiwi had took a chequered flag at Montevarchi and collected results of 2nd, 3rd and 5th across a slippery and stony track that offered very few racing lines. The 31 year old took the bottom platform of the podium.

Valence start

The 2009 version of the YZ450FM was fiery off the line permitting the distinctive black and green colours of the motorcycles to be seen at the very front of the field in all three outings. Although the team use the pre-season international events as viable testing opportunities, Philippaerts was uncompromising and determined against numerous Grand Prix peers and factory representation from four other manufacturers.

The Italian escaped from the pack in the first moto of twenty minutes and two laps and then enjoyed a small battle with Ken de Dycker in the second before getting the better of the Belgian. De Dycker was able to make an early break in the Superfinal – the third race of a dark and overcast day – and Philippaerts rode within himself for second place to confirm his second set of spoils in 2009.

"It was good to win here because the track was difficult," said the 25 year old. "De Dycker was fast but it was good training and another test for the bike. Things are heading in the right way and now we will go to Belgium for some more work before coming back to Italy. Faenza will be an emotional first Grand Prix but I am excited to start the season."

Coppins, who has been splitting his time between training in Italy and spending time in the UK with his new daughter Myla, tackled a few technical issues with his motorcycle but was still a protagonist. He followed his team-mate in Moto1, beat Marc de Reuver to 3rd in Moto2 and was 5th in the last race.

"It wasn't a bad day but I did not ride as well as I did in Italy and struggled to get a rhythm with the track," the winner of the 2008 German GP said. "We had a small few things to sort out with the bike but that is the reason why we do these races. I was quite good in the first laps and had two decent starts in the first two motos; so this was positive. I was a little bit inconsistent with my speed, sometimes very fast and then not so quick, and I know we can be better. We will be working hard for the next month and expecting to move up a level before the first Grand Prix."

The team will now continue their plans in readiness for the 2009 Grand Prix campaign that begins fittingly at their home event in Faenza Italy on March 29th. Both riders will contest the third round of the Italian national series at Ponte a Egola on March 8th.

Yamaha riders on the pace in the Australian sunshine

The Yamaha World Superbike team has enjoyed a successful final pre-season test at the Phillip Island circuit in Australia. The two day test was the final shakedown for the 2009 YZF-R1 in advance of the season opening race this coming weekend and was a valuable opportunity for both riders to get to know the track.

Three-time AMA Superbike champion Ben Spies ended the final day of testing with a quick 1.32"36 lap time, a mere 0.2 of a second off fastest rider Michele Fabrizio. Fellow Yamaha World Superbike team rider Tom Sykes had a crash on the start of the second day of testing and spent a large part of the day resting before going back out again for a final run. He too stepped up the pace and finished the day with an overall time of 1.32"10, a great result considering he missed most of the day's track time after his fall.

Ben Spies, Yamaha World Superbike team – 1.32"36 (160 laps)
"It was a good test for me. We worked on a lot of race stuff, we had some tires to test and get through for Pirelli then we got up to speed on the track and did some longer stints getting the bike to work on race setup. We were looking good for race pace, we did a race simulation and it felt really good. For sure we only got two days testing on the track and the whole race weekend is going to add some adrenaline. I'm extremely happy with the bike and the team is working really well so I can't wait to get started."

Tom Sykes
Tom Sykes

Tom Sykes, Yamaha World Superbike team – 1.32"10 (100 laps)
"I was more than happy with day one, having never seen Phillip Island before, I went out and pulled a 1.33"2, which wasn't too bad considering it's a new track for me. We worked on some minor adjustments and worked on getting a good base setting for the bike. I'm more than confident in its capabilities and set up, we're pretty much on the times. Going into day two I knew I could improve, but unfortunately on my first run, getting up to speed I had a fall. I wasn't even busting myself and not sure how it happened, got on it a bit too soon at the exit of turn 2, ran wide by two feet and where the tarmac ripples slightly the rear end low sided, I caught it then high sided the other way! Luckily I have no serious injuries so will be fighting fit and raring to go at the weekend. I went back out again at the end of the second day and found my pace again easily so am still confident to fight for the podium."

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha World Superbike Team manager
"The test went well with the exception of Tom's crash. We didn't have so many problems and it was very important that the guys learned the circuit as it's a new one for them. By the end of the first day they were making good laps with great pace. By the end of the last day, Ben was up with the fastest riders, Fabrizio and Haga. Tom had a big crash in the morning of the second day, the doctor said to stay in the clinic until the afternoon to rest. In the late afternoon he came back out for one and a half hours time on track, it was impressive as with his last lap he made his fastest lap of the test. In the end the test was also a big running in for us as the bike is still new, we tried to find the best set up, and tried some different tires. We've answered all our questions and feel really good about going into the first race weekend in a few days time, we're ready to fight!"

Yamaha World Supersport team get down to business

The Yamaha World Supersport team riders got straight down to business in Phillip Island in the last pre-season test, showing excellent form and proving they have the pace to run at the front of the pack from the off. Young ex-British Superbike rider Cal Crutchlow proved he has adapted quickly to the Yamaha YZF-R6, lapping consistently and finishing the two-day test fourth quickest with a time of 1.35"3, just 0.5 off fastest rider Sofuoglu. Crutchlow's team mate Fabien Foret has answered any questions about being back on form following last year's crash in Brno, finishing the two-day test just behind Crutchlow in fifth position with a time of 1.35"8.

Cal Crutchlow, Yamaha World Supersport team – 1.35"2 (160 laps)
"I'm really pleased, we've got a lot done, and got a lot of laps in. I'm really looking forward to the race. I'm now consistently up there. I know it's going to be a tough weekend not knowing the circuit in a race situation but I'm feeling confident we can be fighting for the podium. I'm under no illusions it's going to be hard but we've put a lot of work in over the last few days, I want to come out of here with some points and build on it during the year. I'm really enjoying being here, the circuit is fantastic. I've watched it over the years and to come here and ride is a pleasure. When the bike's on form it's a pleasure to ride it, I can't wait to be on the grid waiting to race."

Fabien Foret
Fabien Foret

Fabien Foret, Yamaha World Supersport team – 1.35"8 ( 138 laps)
"For me it's been a really good test, I feel we've found a setting that really makes me feel confident. I now feel I am fully back to speed following last year's crash and have also built up more strength for racing. I'm fully fit and happy with my pace. I didn't go out to try and get the fastest lap but was focused on getting a good race pace. The team is working really well, we've worked to find a set-up that suits me here so I'm optimistic that we can go out and fight for the podium this weekend."

Wilco Zeelenberg, Yamaha World Supersport team manager
"The test has been an interesting one for us, on the first day we had some bad luck with some small problems, which were causing small crashes, however both riders were fine and fast despite this. Fabien has been recovered completely and is fitter than he was at the first test at Portimao in January so I'm happy with him. After a long day of riding and trying suspension settings we ended the first day with a half hour starting exercise which went really well. We brought our own starting light system with us to test the response time of the riders. Both performed well which was great! For the second day our target was to test more suspension settings and do a long run in the afternoon. After finding some improvements in the morning we did a long run with both riders, they were riding together for the race distance test, it was good to see them together and they both enjoyed the chance for an on-track fight instead of testing all the time. It was good practice for them as this is also what they will have to do next week. The championship looks like it's going to get really tough this year, but we will be part of it!"

AMA-SX: Stewart shares AMA series lead after sixth win

Stewart shares AMA series lead after sixth win

After a first round DNF, LandM San Manuel Yamaha rider James Stewart has cut back a 23 point deficit and now joint-leads the 2009 AMA Supercross series (also an FIM World Championship) after recording his sixth consecutive victory in San Diego last Sunday.

The 23 year old Floridian notched his 31st career AMA success at the Qualcomm Stadium in southern California and thanks to Joe Gibbs Racing's Josh Grant's win at Anaheim I in early January, the YZ450F remains unbeaten after seven meetings in the seventeen race competition.

Stewart - competing at the scene of his first of his 31 triumphs in 2002 - grabbed the holeshot and proceeded to establish a margin over reigning champion Chad Reed, who would go on to finish second to the Yamaha rider for the sixth time.

"I think a lot of people wouldn't have thought, after Anaheim I, that I could be leaving California for the east coast tied for the points lead, but it's a testament to my team and the work they put in every week," said Stewart. "They worked their butts off to make me comfortable, and I really do feel comfortable now. The track was definitely tough. I just had some good luck. The track was slick, but, man, this San Manuel Yamaha was awesome. I can't wait for Atlanta!"

San Diego podium

Yamaha are the most prolific manufacturer at the San Diego meeting, having claimed 13 of the 26 main events held so far in the city.

For the first time this season Josh Grant was not able to finish in the top five. The rookie slipped off in the first corner and was recovering positions through the pack when he 'cased' a jump and hit his throat on the bars, forcing his retirement.

Round eight will take place in the confines of the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. If Stewart or another YZ450F racer takes the chequered flag then Yamaha will equal their streak of eight successive wins record in 2000.

Happy birthday, Valentino!

Yamaha Racing

News  16/02/2009
Happy birthday, Valentino!
30 years!
30 years!

Valentino Rossi turns 30 today, 16th February 2009. The Fiat Yamaha rider has had an immensely successful career to date, winning eight world championships, 97 races and becoming the most successful premier-class rider of all time. As he enters his 14th season in the world championship, his sixth with Yamaha, he is still the dominating force in the sport, having recaptured the title in typically exciting style last season.

Below is a collection of quotes from colleagues, fellow riders, family and a few of his more famous fans. Some are recollections of favourite moments with Valentino, whilst some are simply messages for him on the day he turns 30. All are different ways of saying 'Happy Birthday, Valentino!'

Davide Brivio (Fiat Yamaha Team Manager)
"I don't really have a favourite memory of Valentino, or at least it's difficult to choose the 'absolute best!' The first one that comes to mind however is just after the Welkom race in 2004, his famous first MotoGP race with Yamaha. Before Valentino finally joined Yamaha, during one of the meetings the previous September, he said that he wanted to win his first race with Yamaha! This immediately created a lot of pressure for me and for Yamaha, but anyway I promised him that we would all try all our best. Honestly at that time I felt that it was going to be a very difficult thing to achieve! During the final few pre-season tests the chances of doing it began to look better and better, but in a race itself anything can happen. Incredibly, he won that race in Welkom and just after it, after the technical meeting had finished, we were alone in his changing room. Somebody had left a bottle of wine in the fridge and we opened it and raised a toast to that day way back in September, when he had first said that he wanted to win this race. "We did it!" I said to him. It was a very emotional moment for me because it was the moment we achieved our very first target together. Happy Birthday!"

Cesare Cremonini (Singer and friend)
"Vale is a fighter, but armed with a smile. I've never seen him lose his humanity, even in the most difficult moments. One time I found him making gags and jokes as if he was at home with friends, when in fact he had just a couple of minutes to go before a decisive race. While he was putting on his leathers, ready to go out and challenge the world, he transmitted a joy for life, listening to a song on his ipod. "Ciao Ragazzi! See you later!" He said. Then came a sweeping victory at the limits of possibility and a long night of partying together! Happy Birthday, Vale!"

Tom Cruise (Actor and Rossi Fan)
"Valentino, You are a true champion. You keep raising the bar, relentlessly pursuing the next race, the next challenge, the next championship. I also know that the victories don't necessarily become easier. You have to dig deeper, work even harder, become more focused to overcome the distractions. That's what you do. And I, like countless others, know that when you're on that track anything is possible. It was my great pleasure to be there at Laguna Seca and see you take that victory. I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it! You certainly don't disappoint! Thank you for all the great races you have given us, and for all the great races yet to come. Happy Birthday."

Daniel-Day Lewis (Actor and Rossi Fan)
"Every race, every win, every championship! Vale the kid in the portaloo is an old favourite, always irresistible in victory and gracious in defeat (not that he had to prove it very often!) But the all-time favourite memory for me would be him at Laguna Seca going inside Stoner through the dirt. Death or glory; the whole race an answer to those daft enough still to have a question. And to have shaken the hand of that man - that I won't forget either."

Aldo Drudi (Designer and Rossi Fan)
"Cattolica, August 1996, 2pm, very hot. I'm travelling by motorbike on a deserted road towards the sea, when a small and colourful outline appears from an intersection ahead, going very fast. A young boy on a scooter 'closes' the corner, accentuates the bend, runs around the pavement, straightens up and pulls a wheelie... he holds the wheelie on the aqua-green Zip for more than 200 metres, still on the gas. I accelerate and catch him up. The boy lets go of the left handlebar and lifts the left hand in a sign of victory. I recognise him and follow him. Finally he lowers the wheel and with his feet on the footrests he throws embraces and salutes all around the road to his imaginary fans. He notices me, right beside him, and smiles. Happy Birthday Vale!"

Colin Edwards (Team-mate 2005/06/07 and now Tech3 Yamaha rider)
"I have a few fond memories of Vale starting from 2000. Our 2002 victory at the Suzuka 8-Hour was something special, but I'd have to say my one memory that stands out is Laguna 2005. Basically, we were both healthy and fighting for every inch. I did have a slight advantage knowing the track since 1992. As I can recall, it was the first time we were together on track racing close; as most would confirm, he was usually ten seconds in front of me leading by this point in the race! Then he mounted a charge on the last two laps that came up just short...I was happy we didn't have one more lap! Haha!!!! It's not really a memory that I beat him, it's more of a memory of racing side by side with what I consider "The Goat", which translates as The Greatest Of All Time. Happy birthday, you old man!"

Carmelo Ezpeleta (CEO, Dorna Sports)
"My favourite "Valentino moment" is remembering the unique human quality that he showed after his battle with Nicky Hayden for the 2006 MotoGP Championship. It is very easy to behave like a champion when you win, but Rossi's attitude after losing was admirable and impressive."

Lin Jarvis (Managing Director, Yamaha Motor Racing)
"It's difficult to think of a single moment but I guess one of the most memorable moments was during the 2003 season when Valentino had his first meeting with the Yamaha YZR-M1. We had started our secret discussions earlier that year for a possible future move to Yamaha. Vale said he wanted to have a real look at the Yamaha M1 bike so we agreed to organize a secret rendezvous in the paddock at the Donington GP. To keep it secret we arranged to meet on Saturday night in the Yamaha Factory Team pit box. After midnight Vale arrived in a dark parka jacket with the hood up. He looked like a burglar coming to steal our stuff! Once inside he greeted everybody there and introduced himself and then took his time to look at Carlos Checa's M1 from every angle before asking our permission if he could sit on the bike. We were so surprised by his humility and modesty and even more surprised when he paid a complement to us by stating that it was "not so bad" after all. His attitude on that first night time meeting said a lot about the man. Since then I have seen a hundred more examples... Happy Birthday, Vale!"

Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha Team-mate, 2008/09)
"I want to say Happy Birthday to my team-mate Valentino. It is great for me to be racing with a legend like him, but maybe now he's 30 he might slow down a little bit!"

Marco Materazzi (Inter Milan football player and friend)
"We met thanks to Inter, but we became friends thanks to motorbikes: our two great passions! Now the stadium and the circuit are occasions to be fans for one another and to try to bring good luck; you for me and I for you. But the moment in which we feel the truest friends is when we're having dinner together at my house, sitting together at the same table. There we are just Marco and Valentino, two who for many reasons see life in the same way. Today I am just like you, when you put your number on to race it is the double of me when I put mine on to play, because I have 23! For your 30th I give you 'double' greetings. And one more special thing to remember, to succeed in keeping our 'secret' promise, the one which we can only tell when we've achieved it! Happy birthday Vale!"

Guido Meda (Italian TV commentator and friend)
"The end of testing, the slow-down lap. Valentino sees you from the track and goes to wave at you. It's a quick movement and it seems trivial, but it's a sign, a sign of how he focuses his attention; on the bike while he needs to, on the man when he can. He separates the moments, detaches them, changes and reasons. This is why everyone always wants him as their poster boy. The Valentino I know above all defeats what is normal while the legend grows. Now he turns 30, what can I say? As before, he still has his feet on the ground. He is ruthless and very much a perfectionist. He is easy-going and always curious with his own taste for an interesting life, but he is normal. After eight titles and 97 victories, I would like to be sure that I tell the story in the right way and, although the legend continues to grow, I can always find simple words."

Stefania Palma (Mother)
"I have thought about what to tell you through the media for your 30th birthday... I could have dealt with sun, stars, mountains, love and happiness... but I feel it is more right to say, simply... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

Carlo Pernat (Journalist and friend)
"How could I not love you, Valentino? The champions know exactly what they have to do, instinctively. I remember in 1997, when we were making your first TV advert. You had to endure a day with a fussy and long-winded director, who couldn't finish and had to adjourn until the next day. You left and, with your friend Uccio you called to warn that you were already home at your house, and where you were staying also the next day! Straugurissimi, Legend!"

Wayne Rainey (World Champion with Yamaha 1990/91/92)
"Happy 30th birthday Valentino! I love to watch when the odds are against you, the battle is on. Your passion to win is visible and I respect that very much. 30 years old...life is just beginning for you!"

Kenny Roberts Senior (World Champions with Yamaha 1978/79/80)
"Valentino, when I first saw you ride at the ranch in Barcelona... I thought Kevin Schwantz was tall and skinny! You were very impressive then as you are now! Good luck and Happy Birthday!"

Graziano Rossi (Father)
"Simply... I would like to wish him to get to 40 without growing up anymore and then after 40... let's see!"

Rino Salucci (Friend and president of official fan club)
"Am I asking too much if I ask for 30 more years of excitement? Well, I can live with half!

Uccio Salluci (Best friend)
"I hope that for the next 30 years Vale will be as fast as he has been in the previous 30 and that he gives us more passes and excitement like we had at Laguna Seca 2008. 30 more Corkscrews, Vale!"

Marco Simoncelli (250cc World Champion and friend)
"Happy Birthday, Bomber! Although you are now 30, try to give us as much excitement as you have given to us until you were 29! Auguri! Sic58"

Gigi Soldano (Official photographer and friend)
"I know that every time I work with him something different will happen once again. One more time his image is in front of my lens and once again I have a different feeling and taste to be working with him. His little wrinkles, his determined gaze with his piercing eyes, which look right through you if you are not quick to change the shot. We play a game and by now he knows what expression I want before I have even asked, just like a team-mate in a match. The expressions stay in my mind as memories. This is what having Vale in front of the camera means, every time. I am always happy that I have the good fortune to work with him. Today he is posing for me with a chocolate cake to celebrate his 30th birthday. I shoot it as simply as possible; It's not necessary to have anything else to make it a unique shot. A white background is enough, and once again we relax into the 'groove'. A song comes into my head: "When you have a sunny day in December, you can say that summer is already here! Congratulations, Vale!"

James Toseland (Tech3 Yamaha rider)
"30 is a big milestone for a racer because, even though you're not really old as a person, you're starting to be one of the older ones in professional racing and you start to feel that you can't go on forever! I don't think it's a problem for Valentino however, he seems to still feel 25 so as long as that continues he'll be just fine! Happy Birthday and have a great party!"

The Yamaha World Superbike Team has unveiled their new racing livery for 2009, showing its new sponsors and 'war paint' for the upcoming season. The team now fully belong to the Yamaha Motor Europe operations and so have been renamed 'The Yamaha World Superbike Team'. With new riders on board, 3-time AMA Superbike champion Ben Spies and promising Brit Tom Sykes, and a brand new YZF-R1 race machine it's going to be an exciting championship. Both riders are new to the World Superbike series but have already proved to be fast and highly competitive in pre-season testing with their sights set firmly on winning in 2009.

The team's current sponsors are joined this year by new supporters BM Group, Yamalube, Parts Europe and Novation. They will sit alongside existing sponsors FIMER, Akrapovic, Meccanocar, Fabbri, NGK, Rapid Inside , Volvo, Domino, DID, Magneti Marelli, Beta and BMC.

The BM Group has almost 50 years of experience in manufacturing and supplying electrical connections and is a global market leader in its field.

Yamalube offers a line-up of oils and care products for motorcycles, scooters, ATVs and snowmobiles and is a partner in all of Yamaha's main global racing activities. Created by Yamaha, Yamalube offer precise formulas of oils to run all Yamaha engines at their optimum performance while offering maximum protection.

The sleek new design and livery of the 2009 YZF-R1 perfectly complements the impressive performance already achieved in pre-season testing by the team. Featuring the iconic 'speedblock' design and painted in Yamaha's official racing blue colour, the livery will have immediate resonance with fans the world over. The all-new for 2009 bike features technology filtered from the world dominating M1 MotoGP bike ridden to victory in 2008 by world champion Valentino Rossi. Features include a crossplane crankshaft engine and a unique uneven firing order giving linear torque and greater traction, giving talented new riders Ben Spies and Tom Sykes the edge they need to get through and out of corners faster whatever the conditions.

The combination of Spies and Sykes with this awe inspiring machine have already proved to be a formidable pairing, consistently ranking at the top of the field in all pre-season testing so far. With the team continuing to fine tune and develop the bike, they will only get faster as they head out to Phillip Island for the next test next week, the final shake down before the world championship kicks off with round one in the Australian sunshine on the 1st March.

Ben Spies, Yamaha World Superbike Team
"The bike is incredibly confidence inspiring. The way it lays down the power so smoothly, especially through the corners in both the wet and the dry is incredible. It's got better and better over the last couple of months in testing, I really can't wait to get it on the start line at Phillip Island for that first race."

Tom Sykes, Yamaha World Superbike Team
"It's a challenge to get to grips with a new bike, new team and new championship all at the same time, however the fact the bike is amazing and the team so professional has made it a great challenge, I'm really working well with the new R1, the chassis feels really planted and poised, like Ben I can't wait to get out there and race with it!"

The Yamaha World Superbike team structure remains virtually the same for 2009 with the exception of two new replacements. Ben Spies' American Crew Chief Tom Houseworth has moved from the USA to join him in 2009 and Italian new-comer Sergio Verbena steps up to join Tom Sykes as his new Crew Chief for the upcoming championship battle.

With the global credit crunch affecting all areas of racing, The Yamaha World Superbike Team also needed to restructure their budgets by streamlining their operations to be as efficient as possible. Cost savings have been found in the logistics, including number of staff members traveling, as well as in several other areas, without compromising the ability to win on the track. They are determined and motivated to adapt to the situation and go out there and fight for the championship.
