Philippaerts and Paulin head Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team for 2010

The Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team will split its priorities to focus on a strong dual attempt for the 2010 MX1-GP and MX2-GP world championships and has enlisted the services of exciting French teenager Gautier Paulin to steer the revamped YZ250F, while continuing the excellent and successful association with 2008 MX1-GP champion David Philippaerts on the YZ450F.

Philippaerts will embark on his third year with the Italian set-up after penning an extension to his present deal. The 25 year old Italian rode to the title in his first season with the team in 2008 and is currently in third position after totalling a victory and five podiums to-date.

Paulin, 19 years old from Draguignan, led the early stages of the 2009 MX2-GP chase and has won two Grand Prix and taken seven podiums from the thirteen rounds run in the series. He is third in the current standings and after winning the GP of Czech Republic three weeks ago remains a possibility for the crown entering the penultimate meeting of the championship this weekend at Lierop in The Netherlands. Paulin burst on the scene with a flurry of superb wild-card rides in the 2007 campaign; the same year he won the European Championship. The Frenchman will rely on a new YZ250F with which to aim towards more chequered flags in his young career so far.

"Naturally we are pleased to be able to count on the services of a rider of David's capability for another season and his record with the Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team speaks for itself," commented Yamaha Motor Europe Racing Manager Laurens Klein Koerkamp. "The addition of Gautier Paulin is a great asset to the team and his speed, ability and status as one of the main contenders in MX2-GP mean that we are sure to be pushing for the top in both classes in 2010."

"No other manufacturer has won so many premier class world titles in motocross in the past ten years as Yamaha and we have just clinched the MX1-GP manufacturer's and rider's standings again," he added. "For the future, we want to continue to be the leading firm in the motocross world. Importantly, having representation in two classes under the direct wing of the Rinaldi group, means that we can continue our technical evolution at the highest level."

"Development of the 2010 GP machines has been extremely good so far and I am confident that the work we will do over the winter for next season will mean that we retain our exceptional standards in GP racing," commented Team Principal Michele Rinaldi. "We are pleased to welcome a rider of Gautier's undoubted talent and determination to the team, and for us it will be interesting to compete in two classes for the first time since 2005."

The Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team has an unparalleled record in the premier class of the FIM Motocross World Championship earning an amazing five crowns from the last six editions; since MX1-GP was created from the old 500cc and 250cc divisions in 2004. The YZ450F has been a protagonist and front-runner each season since the competitive introduction of the machine. Yamaha has won the Manufacturer's standings by a hefty 68 points and has been present on every podium of the fourteen events held in 2009.

2009 MotoGP - Indianapolis Race

RACE REPORT 31/08/2009
Lorenzo takes commanding win as Rossi slides out
Jorge Lorenzo
Jorge Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo took an emphatic third victory of the season at Indianapolis this afternoon, halving Valentino Rossi's championship lead in the process as his Fiat Yamaha team-mate slid out. The determined Spaniard was joined on the podium by Alex de Angelis and Nicky Hayden, with Tech 3 Yamaha riders Colin Edwards and James Toseland both putting in good rides to finish fifth and sixth.

Dani Pedrosa took the hole shot with Rossi in close pursuit but Lorenzo got a poor start, forcing him to make one of his favourite 'por fuera' moves, around the outside of three riders. The leading trio quickly pulled several seconds ahead of the chasing pack but on lap four Pedrosa slid out, leaving the Yamaha pair alone once again at the front. There was little between the rival team-mates and on the ninth of 27 laps Lorenzo made a brilliant move on Rossi, passing him on the brakes into turn one. Just two laps later the World Champion ran slightly wide and, finding himself on a dirty part of the track, lost the front and went down. He remounted in 16th place but a problem with his throttle forced him to retire soon after.

With no other challengers in sight, Lorenzo just had to bring his number 99 Yamaha home safely and he did so in fine style to win the second Indianapolis Grand Prix, in the Centenary year of the historic track. The youngster has now cut Rossi's lead to 25 points with five rounds remaining and just one week before the second of Rossi's home races at Misano in Italy.

Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 1stTime: 47'13.592
"This is fantastic for me and for my team! I've had two crashes in a row but now I've won, and my closest rivals have crashed instead. Of course I'm sorry for them but these are the highs and lows of racing and it's an amazing result for me. I was strong all weekend and I really want to thank my team for giving me a great bike. I had a hard start and I had to try very hard to pass people and get back to third, but then I had a good rhythm and I was able to go with Valentino and Dani. Once Dani had gone I knew it would be a hard fight between me and Valentino and in fact when he crashed I didn't realise for a while, because I misread my pit-board and thought it said +0! Anyway, my bike was great and from then on it was quite easy, I just stayed focused. I had great fun on the slow-down lap with the fans and I am so happy to win here at this amazing track. The championship was almost gone but in one day things have changed a lot. It will be hard but we won't give up!"

Valentino Rossi
Valentino Rossi

Valentino Rossi - Position: DNF
"Today is a disappointment of course! We struggled here with the setting all weekend but we made an improvement today and I got a good start and was able to stay in touch with Pedrosa. Once he fell, I knew it would be between Jorge and I but I honestly don't know how it would have finished, because Jorge was very fast today. Of course, it would have been better to have finished second than not to finish at all! Unfortunately I ran wide on to a dirty part of the track at turn one and lost the front. I tried to carry on but there was a problem with my throttle and it wasn't possible. I want to congratulate Jorge for his victory and now we look forward to coming back to the front at Misano. We are still leading the championship and this is the most important thing."

Daniele Romagnoli - Team Manager
"We couldn't ask for more today. Jorge did brilliantly all weekend and the team did a great job to improve his bike in order to close the gap to Pedrosa. Jorge was very confident in the race, thanks to another step forward we made with the setting after the warm-u,p and he rode very well. Of course we were lucky today and I am sorry for Valentino, but after Brno we had a huge points gap and now things have changed a lot so we have to make the most of it. We never gave up and this is a great reward for everyone."

Davide Brivio - Team Manager
"This hasn't been the best weekend for us! It was a bit of a strange crash, and this is why as soon as Valentino got back he wanted to check the data. It seems he just found himself on a dirty part of the track and so when he braked he lost the front and that was it! He tried to carry on but it wasn't possible this time, so we have to accept that our championship lead is a bit smaller now! Well done to Lorenzo and the other side of the garage, and now we look forward to Misano in a week's time."

Edwards and Toseland both in top six with impressive Indy result

Colin Edwards and James Toseland claimed impressive top six positions for the Monster Tech3 Yamaha team with hard fought performances in today's dramatic Indianapolis Grand Prix in front 75,000 spectators. Edwards came home a solid fifth with the Texan disappointed not have been closer to the front in his second home race of the season. After Dani Pedrosa crashed out of the lead Edwards was briefly third before he began to struggle with some rear grip issues. Today's results saw Edwards to retain fifth position in the championship standings.

With a daring early charge from 10th on the grid Briton James Toseland scored his equal best result of the season with sixth place after an thrilling late race battle with Marco Melandri. After Melandri had briefly got ahead on lap eight Toseland was back in sixth on lap 10 and then rebuffed every challenge until Melandri crashed out of seventh position with two laps remaining.

Colin Edwards
Colin Edwards

Colin Edwards - Position: 5th - Time: +0'26.254
"It wasn't as much fun as thought it was going to be, to be honest with you, I had hopes of better result at my home race. I did the same times I did all weekend but I struggled with some grip issues, it just felt like everything was pivoting on the rear, it was like speedway, as soon as I got the bike on the side the rear came around and that is not the fast way. I couldn't put any load on the rear. At the end of the day we had the same tyres as the guy who won the race so whether it was so mething in our set-up or riding style, I don't know. All I could was watch Nicky and Andrea walk away from me and I took some big risks on the brakes. Once Nicky got by it became hard to manage and I think we turned a tyre on the rim, I had a lot of vibration over the final ten laps."

James Toseland
James Toseland

James Toseland - Position: 6th - Time: +0'32.408
"It's very pleasing to finish in the top six, I know I'm capable of these sort of results and need to be doing it very weekend. It was an entertaining race for me, pushing my way through from tenth on the opening lap and today I don't think I lost any friends doing that. Later in the race I had a great battle with Marco Melandri until he made a mistake with two laps go, I thought it would be a fight right to the end with him. I didn't have good feeling in the warm-up so I was little worried for the race but we softened the bike up a little and I was able to keep my pace fr om qualifying. Melandri was really strong in turns one and two but i just kept covering my line, kept my head down and kept pushing. Now I'm really looking forward to Misano next week, a track I know very well from superbikes."

Herve Poncharal - Team Manager
"A very good weekend for us to have two riders in the top six. Colin had a great start and was right with the front group which was very exciting for us, it was pity that with some small problems he couldn't follow the pace. And special congratulations to James, it wasn't an easy weekend for him and he made a very good recovery from tenth on the grid. It was a shame for the show that both Pedrosa and Rossi crashed but for our team we got some very good points to enable us to consolidate fourth position in the Team Championship. And congratulations to Jorge to win after all the problems he has had recently."

MX GP: Cairoli 2009 MX1-GP World Champion!

Yamaha Racing

RACE REPORT 30/08/2009
Cairoli 2009 MX1-GP World Champion!
World Champions
World Champions

The 2009 MX1-GP World Championship belongs to Yamaha Red Bull De Carli's Tony Cairoli as the Sicilian took 6th position in the sand of Lierop and the Grand Prix of the Netherlands and confirmed his status as champion for the first time in the category. The 23 year old celebrated with his Italian team as he converted twelve of fourteen rounds as the 'red plate' holder into a maiden title success, becoming the youngest MX1-GP number one and, with his third career championship, also the first to claim crowns in both classes.

Yamaha were able to celebrate the Manufacturer's title as the YZ450F again made the podium for the fourteenth time this season, a 100% record, thanks to Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team's Josh Coppins who was 2nd overall for his third rostrum appearance of the campaign.

Tony Cairoli
Tony Cairoli

Watched by 18,000 spectators under bright sunny skies at Lierop the Grand Prix of the Netherlands represented the penultimate round of the series and reactivation of the calendar after a small three week break. The Lierop sand moved and shifted with each lap and the waves and ripples demanded a different technique from the riders. The physical demands were increased and the course represented a completely altered challenge compared to the hard-pack and simple layout in the Czech Republic several weeks ago.

Cairoli came into the meeting with discomfort in his left knee as a consequence of a meniscus problem. He tentatively rode to 12th place in the qualification heat while main rival Max Nagl was 3rd. In the first race a conservative pace brought him up to 5th, three places ahead of the German after the latter had crashed. A tense second moto took place later in the afternoon as Cairoli gave chase to Nagl, requiring just two points and an overtaking move to mathematically begin celebrations. The four-time GP winner in '09 made light work of his pass and rode comfortably to 4th confirming the championship with one round remaining.

Josh Coppins
Josh Coppins

Lierop is one of Josh Coppins' preferred tracks and the New Zealander shook off the destabilising affects of two small slips in the second moto to add a strong 2nd place to his 4th obtained earlier in the day. Team-mate and outgoing world champion David Philippaerts was the picture of fault-free riding in Moto1 and expertly denied Cairoli's stable-mate Tanel Leok on the last lap to score 2nd spot. The Italian suffered a crash on the second corner at the start of Moto2 and had to work hard to return to 8th, for 5th in the final classification of the Grand Prix. Leok was a decent 4th overall and tied on points for the last podium step. The Estonian was the victim of a first corner tumble with other riders at the beginning of Moto2 and had his hands full trying to fly back from the second half of the pack with a buckled front disc brake. He made it to 6th.

David Philippaerts
David Philippaerts

Although Cairoli and the YZ450F has been victorious Yamaha can still count on decent positions in the championship standings for the rest of their MX1-GP elite. Philippaerts is currently 3rd, Coppins is 6th and can still break into the top five while Leok is confirmed in 7th. The Manufacturer's title has been won by a 68 point advantage.

The Grand Prix of Brazil will be the fifteenth and final round of the championship and visits the Canelinha circuit for the first time in two weeks.

Tony Cairoli, Yamaha Red Bull De Carli:

"This means so much to me and I am a little lost for words at the moment. I did not expect this in my first season and was already a bit surprised to have the red plate by the third round, and then keep it until the end. If you look at most of the MX2 riders who move up to MX1 they need a season or two to establish themselves so this is a big achievement for us and I am very proud. In the second moto here my goal was just to pass Max and push as much as I could to get away. I could not walk well on Friday so I was full of a lot of doubt for this GP; I just took it steady, when the track got rougher I could push a little bit more. I want to say thanks to everybody, all my team, my family; I am so happy."

Josh Coppins, Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team:

"I have been feeling really good riding in the sand so I knew I had a chance here and I like this track. I did expect to do well but you are never sure on a circuit this difficult. I think it was a pretty good ride, not quite as decent as Latvia; in fact I am even a little disappointed that I could not push Ken that much in the second moto. I made two small crashes which meant the gap was too big."

Tanel Leok
Tanel Leok

Tanel Leok, Yamaha Red Bull De Carli:

"The first race was good but I started pushing too late. I was riding really well by the end and was close to passing Philippaerts after a decent charge. In the second moto Ramon crashed and I hit his back and then someone hit me. It was difficult to get going after that, especially because the front brake disc was slightly buckled and grabbing the front wheel over the jumps. Again I had a bit of bad luck and my speed was good, so the result should have been better."

David Philippaerts, Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team:

"I am happy with my motos. Lierop is always a hard place to come to but I like and enjoy the track. The first moto went well and for forty minutes I rode steady and without mistakes. My crash was like that of an amateur in the second race but I pushed really hard and came back to eighth, which was not too bad and I am pleased with fifth today. I am happy for Tony because he worked hard for this season and he deserved the championship. Things did not go our way in 2009 but I want to fight for the title again next year. We will try and win the Nations together now."

RACE REPORT 30/08/2009
Monni 10th in Lierop
Manuel Monni
Manuel Monni

The fourteenth round of fifteen in the MX2-GP World Championship took place in the rough and shifting sand of Lierop for the Grand Prix of the Netherlands and Yamaha 3C Racing's Manuel Monni was the highest placed rider with the YZ250F; finishing 10th overall. Monster Energy Ricci Motocross Team duo Nico Aubin and David Guarneri were unable to complete a full scorecard.

Lierop saw the paddock reconvene after an August hiatus of three weeks and also bring the series towards a conclusion. 18,000 spectators relied on bright Dutch skies to enjoy the last European event of the motocross calendar.

Fontanesi
Fontanesi

Before the MX2-GP motos got underway on Sunday Yamaha had cause for delight as Italian teenager Chiara Fontanesi won her first ever Women's World Championship moto with a narrow victory Saturday afternoon. Riding her 3C Racing Yamaha YZ125 Fontanesi defeated new world champion and factory rider Stephanie Laier. She then secured second position on Sunday morning to confirm her first podium visit.

Team-mate Manuel Monni was 10th with results of two 12th positions. The Italian champion battled through from mid-pack. Starting from 8th in the gate for the MX2-GP sprints Aubin suffered two falls in the opening laps of Moto1 and could not restart in sufficient time. The Frenchman had better luck in the second race as he filled 10th spot. Guarneri took the best result of the day for the Yamaha crew with 7th in the first race but 'hit the wall' physically in the second moto and dropped down the ranking to 21st. Loic Larrieu crashed in the second foray but a decent 9th place was resgistered in Moto1.

Utag Yamaha.com's Zach Osborne, the only winner with the YZ250F in 2009, took two points for 19th in Moto1 but his second outing was ended prematurely with a mechanical problem.

In the series standings Guarneri is 4th and has a slim chance of making the top three. Monni is 8th and can still breach the top seven. Aubin is 9th.

Canelinha will host the Grand Prix of Brazil and the last 2009 meeting for the motocross world championship fraternity in two weeks time.

Aubin
Aubin

Nico Aubin, Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci MX Team:

"I hit the rear wheel of Roelants in the second corner of the first moto and had to restart in last position. I got going again but was last and then had another crash soon after and could not restart. After being lapped three times it was clear the race was over. In the second moto I started well but could not avoid mistakes in the first few laps. I could not ride with the best rhythm; it was a hard GP for me."

Zach Osborne, Utag Yamaha.com:

"I got off to a decent start in the first race but someone went down in front of me in the second turn and I went back to about 20th. I fought back up by five or six positions but then I had a crash and it took me a while to get going. I ended up 19th which was not a good result but the speed and rhythm was starting to come back to me. In the second race I put in a good start and worked hard up to 13th but then we had a problem with the bike. It was disappointing but overall I am getting back on track; we have been in a tough rut recently."

Chiara Fontanesi, Yamaha 3C Racing:

"When I was training in the last couple of weeks on the sand I saw that my speed was OK and thought I might be able to make a good result at Lierop, but when I saw the times in practice on Saturday I thought that reaching the podium would be really difficult. When I was leading the moto yesterday I felt really comfortable and this gave me confidence. This is only my first year in the championship so I hope for more results like this in the future."
