The opening third of the 2010 FIM MX1-GP World Championship was completed with the Grand Prix of Catalunya at the Bellpuig circuit and the Yamaha YZ450FM appeared at the front of both motos in the MX1-GP class as Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team's David Philippaerts went on to earn 2nd place and collect his second trophy of the season so far. Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci MX Team's Ken De Dycker was 6th overall and led the second sprint.

Round five of fifteen occurred in excellent weather conditions and the brief heavy shower of Saturday helped churn the short and hilly circuit 100km west of Barcelona into another rough and bumpy set of races. Watched by 17,000 spectators Philippaerts' Ohlins suspension and set-up was fully tested in the first moto and performed admirably as the Italian powered his way to second position. An incident landing from a jump left the 25 year old with a slightly sore back which affected his speed in the second race but it is full credit to the 2008 world champion's determination that he was able to participate in a battle for fourth spot and rode error-free to record 5th place.

De Dycker struggled over the bumps in the first moto to 8th but a refinement to his motorcycle for the second race paid-off as the Belgian surged up to the rear wheel of front-runner Max Nagl and relegated the German to second place for several laps. A battle ensued for the lead and by the end of a changeable forty minutes De Dycker was 4th; equalling his second-best finish achieved on two other occasions this year.

Philippaerts is 3rd in the world championship and 27 points away from Max Nagl and 43 from Tony Cairoli. De Dycker holds 5th.

The Grand Prix of USA, the first trip by the FIM series to America this century, will constitute round six and will take place in two weeks time on May 30th.

David Philippaerts, Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team:

"I was riding well in the first moto and my times were good but in the middle of the race I landed heavily from a jump and had pain in my back. Every lap of the second moto was difficult and I took it easy so I would not crash. I owe some thanks to my doctor because he treated my hand and also my back. Now we have two weeks free so I can recover. Today was pretty good and I am happy to stay on the bike and reach the podium."

Ken De Dycker, Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci MX Team:

"I really struggled in the first moto and had some arm-pump so we changed the set-up for the second moto and it was better. My start was already faster and I was looser on the bike and breathing better. I felt calm and was able to make some good speed. The track was difficult because the ruts were deep and hard in places and it was easy to catch the footpegs. When I got into the lead I knew it would be tough to get away and I did not want to push too hard and crash."

Promising debut by Paulin at Bellpuig

Paulin in Bellpuig
The Grand Prix of Catalunya - the second FIM MX-GP in a week - witnessed the debut of Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team's Gautier Paulin as the talented Frenchman took his works YZ250FM to 5th at a sunny Bellpuig in front of 17,000 spectators.

Round five of fifteen saw the 20 year old tentatively make his return to MX-GP action after more than a month recovering from a broken left fibula. Despite an obvious lack of race sharpness, Paulin was however his usual flamboyant self on the YZ250FM and used the new chassis to fully explore the light handling and increased manoeuvrability of the bike across what was a very rutted and bumpy, yet fast, terrain. A lonely run to 4th place in the first moto was impressive in his first Grand Prix for eight months but the speed and performance was improved for the second race when he became embroiled in first corner carnage and pulled through from almost last for an excellent 10th.

Bike it Cosworth Yamaha's Zach Osborne was 18th overall but his results of 12th and a DNF were in stark contrast to the American's pace. He slipped out of a top four position in the first moto and also suffered another tip-off, but thrilled onlookers with a flight back through the field. The 20 year old was comfortably heading towards a 3rd position finish in Moto2 but a mechanical problem ended his participation.

Yamaha Monster Energy Gariboldi's Harri Kullas was 8th overall and the rookie was pleased with 10th and 6th positions; the second race classification signifying his highest in just five GPs. Another rider enjoying a small personal landmark at Bellpuig was Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci MX Team's Alessandro Lupino who was 9th by the end of the day but was strong in the second moto to set a career-best finish of 3rd. Team-mate Loic Larrieu did not record any points but continues his trek back to fitness after off-season injury problems. European Champion Christophe Charlier could not ride as a consequence of his injured right thumb and will also miss the next round of the series in an effort to be fit for the visit to France on June 6th.

Osborne is 8th in the world championship and 15 points from the top five. Kullas is 10th and 14 points behind the American.

Osborne will enjoy a home Grand Prix in two weeks as Glen Helen in California, east of LA, prepares for its first world championship visit since 1990.

Gautier Paulin, Yamaha Monster Energy MX Team:

"I am quite happy. This was my first Grand Prix for the team and they have been supporting me a lot, so I was very happy to be here and to be racing for them. In the first moto I was feeling good physically and mentally and the bike was working great but the speed was not really there to progress. I had a good start in the second moto but then Frossard lost his back wheel in the slippery first turn and I had to run off the track. I restarted almost last and ran almost the whole race with Frossard. I worked my way back to tenth and my riding was better; that race made me believe that in a few weeks I will be able to do something good in the next couple of GPs. I was tired in the second moto, I had a bit of pain in my foot and my hands are also full of blisters because it was an intense day. I ended up losing the podium by four points so the second moto start was costly but I have to be happy with this and build my way up slowly."

Zach Osborne, Bike it Cosworth Yamaha:

"'Gutted'; that is the only word I have to describe the day. In the first race I made two mistakes which effectively cost me the podium at least that is what I thought, if I could have finished third in the second moto when I would have made it! I lost the front end going down the hill and Musquin came down underneath me and I ended up piled on top of him. I could not push the bike off of him because we were in the mud. I lost the front again in the second crash. I know I have the speed and the fitness and the results will come; sometimes things are not in your control."

Harri Kullas, Yamaha Monster Energy Gariboldi:

"After taking fifth in the qualification heat it was much easier to pick a gate! I started in the top ten in the first moto and rode my own race to take tenth, which was OK, nothing special. The gate bounced up in the second moto and I was a bit behind on the straight. I went slower and to the inside on the first corner and took a lot of positions when there was a big crash. I was mid-pack on the first lap and had some good lines. I passed many riders and had some luck when other riders retired. Van Horebeek caught me near the end but I gave it my all and beat him for 6th; my best result and it is getting better and better for me."

Alessandro Lupino, Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci MX Team:

"This is my best result so far and I am really happy. I actually did not know I was third so it was unbelievable really. I like this track and the hard-pack is good for me. Today was fantastic and I want to give thanks for all the people that help me."
