| | Flyaway Grand Prix events for riders normally tend to pass in a blur of airports, planes, cars, hotels and counting the minutes at the circuit when not on the track setting fast lap-times. For Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team's Gautier Paulin and Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci's Alessandro Lupino the Brazilian round of the FIM MX2-GP World Championship last week at Campo Grande provided a slightly alternative experience.
In the depths of the Mato Grosso do Sol flat bush-land, Paulin and Lupino were just two of a dozen motocross stars along with guests and the media to attend the excellently presented Mormaii Pantanal Region Day. A remote Brazilian ranch provided the youngsters with the chance to sample dishes typical of the region such as Piranha soup and Soba noodles, learn something of the culture of the state, witness a traditional dance by a local dancing troupe and digest a hefty barbeque.
After a morning of activities the duo took part in a friendly football match against fellow racing peers and eager press before heading off with horses to indulge in some fishing at a nearby lake (although they both thankfully managed to avoid the four Anacondas that apparently reside in the large pond).
"It was a great day because it was the chance to do something different and also get the riders together when normally we are all focussed on our own thing and in our own little worlds," Paulin said. "Sometimes it is nice to break away from the grand prix routine and to come away from the track and see a little bit of what the country is like." |
