Yamaha Sterilgarda prepare for the superbike season finale at Magny Cours

SETUP REPORT 29/09/2010
Yamaha Sterilgarda prepare for the superbike season finale at Magny Cours
Magny Cours
Magny Cours
A mixed round of racing at Imola last weekend witnessed the first wet Superpole of the year disrupting the grid for Sunday's two races. Yamaha Sterilgarda rider Cal Crutchlow started from 12th on the grid to secure a podium finish in race two with an incredible ride. Team mate James Toseland experience a continued run of bad luck with two DNFs despite showing strong, podium contending pace in the early stages of each race. The team now head straight to Magny Cours in France for the 13th and final round of the 2010 World Superbike Championship.

The riders set up for the final two races with Crutchlow sitting in fifth place in the standings on 239 points, 35 behind Carlos Checa in fourth. Team mate James Toseland sits two places back in seventh with 187 points, 51 points behind Noriyuki Haga in sixth.

"I'm all set to go this weekend after Imola," said Cal Crutchlow. "The last Italian round was tough with the strange starting grid, but we had a great set up on what was a difficult track. I was really happy with the podium we scored and I'm confident if we can get a good grid start on Sunday in Magny Cours I can end the year with the Yamaha superbike team on a high with more podiums!"

"It was a really disappointing race weekend in Italy," said James Toseland. "I am determined to go to Magny Cours for my last two races on the R1 and deliver good results. I have always been lucky at the French circuit, after a year if lots of bad luck I think we deserve some good luck here! We had really good pace at Imola in the races and had found a great set up so I want to use that to score in France."

Magny Cours technically speaking according to Marcus Eschenbacher, Cal Crutchlow's crew Chief
"Magny Cours is a track with typical Formula one design. It has a very tight start, stop corners and tight chicanes. First our gearbox has to be adjusted to suit these conditions. Also the chassis has to be adjusted to offer a good compromise; stable enough for hard braking and agile enough to achieve fast cornering in the tight sections. As usual the weather conditions are also very critical Magny Cours can be very cold in the morning with a high chance of rain. In light of this we will keep the option of a 'bad weather' setup. This means that we will have two bikes with different setups if the conditions are not clear."

Magny Cours Technically Speaking according to Frankie Carchedi, James Toseland's Crew Chief
"We will be looking to finish the season strong at Magny Cours. James's race pace was good enough to fight for the win at Imola but a bad qualifying put an end to this. We will be doing everything to finish strongly with the same set-up as Imola. In recent races we have found a set-up which has good balance and handling. Magny Cours requires both, but weather conditions could make things a little trickier. Forecasts predict a wet weekend, so we will be working hard on a good wet set-up!"

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team Manager
"I'm looking forward to this race, we go there with the intention to finish the season with the best results possible. Hopefully we can reach this target. Yamaha was has been very competitive at the Magny Cours circuit over the last four years, with the set up we found at Imola we think we can continue the run of success."

ENDS

This weekend at Magny Cours marks the last race of the season for European Superstock 600 2010 Champion Jeremy Guarnoni, who sealed victory last weekend at Imola on his YZF-R6. It also marks the return to the European Superstock 1000 Championship of Yamaha YZF-R1 rider Loris Baz who has been enjoying a ride in the British Superbike Championship with the Motorpoint Yamaha Team R1.

MotoGP Motegi - Preview

Yamaha Racing

SETUP REPORT 28/09/2010
Yamaha head to Japanese homeland for first of flyaway treble
Motegi Twinring
Motegi Twinring
The Fiat Yamaha Team heads to Yamaha's homeland of Japan this week for the first in a punishing triple-header of 'flyaway' races in Japan, Malaysia and Australia. There are just five more races still left to go and championship-leader Jorge Lorenzo and his team-mate Valentino Rossi are determined to record a few more top results before the curtain comes down on the year in early November.

Lorenzo took a superb win at Motegi last season, passing his team-mate to take a memorable victory. The 23-year-old loves the track and is looking forward to getting back on the podium this time out, having missed out for the first time this season at the last race in Aragon. The Spaniard leads the championship from 56 points from Dani Pedrosa but, despite the points gap, he knows that he can not afford any mistakes if he is to realise his dream of clinching a first premier class world title.

Nine-time champion Rossi also has happy memories of the Japanese circuit, having won there in 2001 and then again with Yamaha in 2008, when he sewed up his eighth world title. He arrives in less than perfect shape this time however after an injury-hit season, with his damaged shoulder still limiting his power and capacity to ride. He knows that the right-handed Motegi track will be extra hard on his body this weekend but is looking forward to Sepang and Phillip Island, which he hopes will be a little easier, as he looks to finish his difficult season on a high.

Motegi has been a victim of the weather over the last couple of years, with qualifying cancelled in 2009 due to torrential rain and then the ash cloud earlier this year meaning the entire race had to be postponed, hence its delayed appearance in the calendar now. Designed in 1997 as a test venue, Motegi features a somewhat geometric track layout. The surface offers good levels of grip without being overly abrasive but the proliferation of second gear turns, linked for the most part by mini-drag strips, means braking and acceleration are the main prerequisite to a fast lap time.

Jorge Lorenzo - "Get back on the podium"
"Motegi is Yamaha's home and I always feel proud to ride there. Last Year I got my first victory at this track in MotoGP and it was one of the best moments of the season. I like Motegi and I think it can be great for us also this season. The main goal is to get back on the podium and continue getting as many points as possible. We will try to be fast from Friday and start this run of three races as well as we can.

Valentino Rossi - "We will do our best"
"Aragon was a hard weekend, both because we couldn't find the right setting for our M1 and because I had a lot of trouble with my shoulder. The leg is now almost back to normal again - I have even started running - but the shoulder is a problem and we know now that this is not going to change until we have time to treat it properly. I have some great memories from Motegi, especially winning the championship in 2008, but I am expecting this weekend to be quite difficult on my body. We have a hard three weeks ahead but after this race two of my best tracks are coming up, and I am hoping for some good results. We will do our best and see what happens!"

Wilco Zeelenberg - "We can't relax too much!"
"After missing out on the podium for the first time this season we know that we have some work to do, because our rivals have taken a step forward. Jorge has a strong lead still but we can't afford to relax too much because anything can happen. He likes Motegi a lot and we hope that we will be quickly able to find a good setting for our M1. As always our target will be the podium and as many points as we can take without risking too much."

Davide Brivio - "A tough run of races"
"Valentino is understandably disappointed that he isn't in as good physical shape as he had hoped, and this is a pity for him because the leg is really quite good now! Aragon was hard on him but generally our bike goes well at Motegi so we hope it will be better, even if the nature of the track will still be hard on him. This run of races is tough on everyone but we will be working as hard as ever and hoping for some good results as we head towards the final races. Unfortunately I had to miss the last round because of a problem with my back; I still have some pain but I have managed to fly to Japan and I am really looking forward to getting back to work."

MX-GP: Frossard joins Yamaha Monster Energy MX team for 2011

Yamaha Racing

News  28/09/2010
Frossard joins Yamaha Monster Energy MX team for 2011

Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team will expand to accommodate three riders for the 2011 FIM Motocross World Championship with the acquisition of 23 year old Frenchman Steven Frossard to steer the factory YZ450FM in the MX1-GP category.

For the first time since 2005 the Italian crew will concentrate their efforts on a three rider roster split between two classes as Frossard makes his MX1-GP debut alongside 2008 world champion David Philippaerts (GP winner and 3rd ranked racer in the 2010 series) and will also share the awning with countryman and MX2-GP representative Gautier Paulin.

Frossard has been one of the main protagonists in the MX2-GP series for the last three seasons and has been a regular face on the podium as one of the fastest men in the competition. Hailing from Marseille, Frossard claimed his first grand prix victory in 2010 and picked up five other trophies on his way to third in the final classification.

"It is great to be joining a team like Yamaha Monster Energy MX in my first season in the MX1-GP class," said Frossard, who expects to start riding at the end of October. "When someone like Michele Rinaldi and his crew show an interest in you then it is a big compliment because the amount of titles they have speaks for itself. I will have to learn about the bike and the secrets of racing in MX1 and I plan to work hard over the winter to do the very best I can in 2011."

The Frenchman's potential has been eyed by Yamaha Motor Europe and YRRD Principal Michele Rinaldi and Yamaha are pleased to welcome the rider into MX1-GP with the best equipment and resources the works effort has available.

"We are really pleased to be able to expand the team and have a rider like Steven with his ability to join David on the YZ450FM," said Rinaldi. "We had a busy season in 2010 developing the brand new technology from Yamaha and also working closely with Ohlins for the first time in many years. We made some important and successful progress and now we will be able to count on the information from two riders to remain competitive and at the top of MX1-GP. Together with Gautier we have three very capable riders for 2011 and I think it will be an exciting adventure for all of us. I would like to thank Yamaha Motor Europe and our sponsors, especially Monster Energy for letting the team and Yamaha's presence in the FIM world championship grow."

Frossard burst to prominence in the 2008 FIM MX2-GP world championship where he gained his first podium results (two, in Germany and Ireland) and announced himself as a candidate for future wins. He also claimed the French Elite crown the same season having won the MX2 equivalent three years before. In 2009 he led a Grand Prix for the first time, grabbed his maiden moto chequered flags (Bulgaria and Germany) and was runner-up on three occasions of his four rostrum appearances to take sixth in the world. Frossard also represented his country for the first time at the Motocross of Nations. He beat his world championship position by three ranks in 2010 and also vastly improved his sand riding.

Yamaha secures victory in the AMA with the YZF-R1

Team Graves Yamaha rider Josh Hayes wrapped up the AMA (American Motorcycle Association) Superbike championship on his Yamaha R1 at the Barber Motosports Park in the USA on Sunday. The win, which was Hayes' first career championship victory, is also the first victory for Yamaha in the American premier road racing class since 1991 when Thomas Stevens took the win. The championship came down to the wire with Hayes needing a second in the first race and a top eight finish in the second to secure the title, beating rival Tommy Hayden by 12 points in the final standings.

Meanwhile Team Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 rider Josh Herrin finished third in the AMA Daytona SportBike Championship, while Austin Dehaven won the AMA SuperSport title on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

"A huge thank you to Yamaha for bringing me onboard for my first Superbike ride," said Josh Hayes afterwards. "I am glad I was able to race well and bring home the R1's first AMA Superbike championship."

Yamaha road racing team manager Tom Halverson added, "This is probably the best team we've ever had, and the effort that everyone has made to win the championship is just incredible. From the machinists to the secretaries back at Yamaha, thank you. The race crew has really been amazing this year too. Josh has been a great rider, and it's easy to stand behind him because he puts in so much effort."

MX-GP: Paulin 5th in MX1 at 64th Motocross of Nations

Yamaha Racing

RACE REPORT 27/09/2010
Paulin 5th in MX1 at 64th Motocross of Nations
Paulin for France
Paulin for France
Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team's Gautier Paulin enjoyed a decent first competitive outing on the works YZ450FM by finishing 5th overall in the MX1 category with results of 5th and 9th in the two motos run in sweltering conditions at the rough and hard-pack Thunder Valley, Lakewood, Colorado for the 64th Motocross of Nations.

The Frenchman, who captured four MX2-GP podiums from the final six rounds of the FIM world championship on the YZ250FM had only one week to test and set-up the YZ450FM with the innovative rear-slanted fuel injected 450cc motor and was able to lead his country against the world's best in the MX1 class of the annual event.

Clear skies and temperatures in the mid-30s created tough racing circumstances for the riders who also had to cope with the thinner air of the venue 1600m above sea level. Paulin was on the pace immediately across the fast and jumpy circuit that involved a mix of hard-pack and rutted turns. He took third place in the qualification heat on Saturday and then set the fastest time almost two seconds ahead of AMA National MX champion Ryan Dungey in Sunday morning's warm-up.

Race-day involved three motos with MX1 competing with MX2, MX2 and MX Open and then MX Open with the MX1 riders in the gate. From the six results recorded by the three riders representing the twenty countries on the line the five best counted towards the final score.

Paulin circulated in fifth place just adrift of the rear wheel of Jonathan Barragan in the first moto and while France's chances of success were ruined by back luck for MX2 world champion Marvin Musquin Paulin continued to push. A bad start and two mistakes in the second outing for the Yamaha ace saw him sprint up from outside the top twenty to secure 9th and mean that France classified 7th overall.
Osborne
Osborne
Other Yamaha stars in Colorado were Bike it Cosworth Yamaha's Zach Osborne (the American representing Puerto Rico), Yamaha Monster Energy Gariboldi's Harri Kullas (Finland) and Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci MX Team's Alessandro Lupino (Italy) all on YZ250F machinery.

Osborne, who turned 21 on Saturday, finished fifth in the MX2 category and could have perhaps done better than 15th and 14th if it wasn't for a first corner crash in the first race and a slip in the second. Puerto Rico were a decent 10th. Kullas was 7th in the same class and crossed the line 19th both times of asking to mark Finland's best two results. Lupino was just behind (8th) and with 20th and 25th from a gate of 40 riders was happy to help Italy achieve their goal of a final ranking in the top five with 5th. Team-mate and 3C Racing's Manuel Monni scored 6th in the MX Open competition.
Lupino for Italy
Lupino for Italy
The 2010 international motocross season has now finished although Osborne stands an excellent chance of taking Yamaha's first MX2 British Championship (and first title since 2001) next weekend at Hawkstone Park for the final round of eight in the UK series. Paulin will next be in action at the popular Bercy Supercross in Paris during November.

Gautier Paulin:

"The team did a really great job and my bike was perfect today. I am a bit disappointed to finish fifth in the first moto because I felt that my real place should have been third or fourth; I was a bit tight on the bike. In the second moto I had a really bad start and then two small crashes which meant I had to fight back from 23rd to 9th. Together with Marvin we [France] were leading at one point in the first race but the conditions became difficult, and for me in the last part of the day the low sun made life pretty tough. Anyway it was not a bad way to finish the season and I want to thank the team so much for all they have done."

Zach Osborne:

"It was a decent weekend. I made some silly mistakes; on the first corner of the first moto and then another when I was eleventh or twelfth in the second. It was not the best showing today but I still have a lot to think about with the British Championship decider coming up next weekend. I'll go back to Europe and then head home for a few weeks. It was a good experience being here and it was my favourite of the year so far."

Harri Kullas:

"It was hard against the 450s and I was asleep at the beginning of the first moto. I pushed back to take nineteenth and had a small problem with the clutch. I made a silly mistake by reacting to Karro next to me at the start of the next moto and hit the gate. I fought back strongly on the first lap and followed Tonus for a while and had an OK race. I finished 19th twice and I'm a bit disappointed by that. I had 18th and 16th last year. I did my best and rode as fast as I could. I finished both races but it could have been better."

Alessandro Lupino:

"The first race was not bad. I started in thirtieth position and won ten places but in the second race I went straight into a rider who had crashed on the first corner. I was last and tried to push but had some stomach cramps. We finished in the top five which was our goal so I am happy. The event was really nice and it was wonderful to be here."

Crutchlow charges through to a hard fought Imola podium finish

Yamaha Racing

RACE REPORT 26/09/2010
Crutchlow charges through to a hard fought Imola podium finish
The second race of the Imola World Superbike round today saw Yamaha Sterilgarda rider Cal Crutchlow deliver an inspired ride. Coming from a bad start, dropping to 13th off the line, Crutchlow put the hammer down and chased down the lead pack. An engine failure by Leon Haslam scattered the following riders. Undeterred he kept on pushing, overtaking Max Biaggi with six laps left to go for fourth place. Lap 18 saw him swiftly dispatch Tom Sykes at the last chicane before the start finish line for third place which he then held to the line to claim his podium, finishing just 3.9 seconds off the leader. Team mate James Toseland started the second race well, passing eight riders in the first few laps, but unfortunately lost the front end whilst pushing hard in the third lap and was unable to rejoin.

Race one earlier in the day saw Toseland shoot off the line and begin an all out assault on the front pack. Starting from 17th on the grid, Toseland had made up ten places by the third lap to run in seventh. By lap 7 he had made it to sixth when a technical failure coming out of the Curva Acque Minerali ended his race. Team mate Cal Crutchlow dropped slightly to 14th off the start line from his 12th position on the grid but fought back to run just behind his team mate in seventh position by lap seven. Coming into lap 12 Crutchlow had climbed further and took Smrz for fifth going into the first corner. Unfortunately he ran wide onto the gravel the following lap, dropping to tenth where he held on, fighting off championship leader Biaggi to keep his position at the finish line.

As the Yamaha riders head to Magny Cours next in France for the 13th and final round of the 2010 World Superbike Championship they do so with Crutchlow sitting in fifth place in the standings on 239 points, 35 behind Carlos Checa in fourth. Team mate James Toseland sits two places back in seventh with 187 points, 51 points behind Noriyuki Haga in sixth.

"I'm happy with today in the end. I'm disappointed with the first race, I think I had podium pace and was catching up to the guys in front but made an error which dropped me back. The second race was good, I had a bad start then Noriyuki Haga and Carlos Checa and I all had to come from the back which made it interesting. Big thanks to Yamaha who put together a great bike this weekend for me, we were really strong and put in some good laps towards the end of the races and I think we showed what we are capable of."

James Toseland

James Toseland, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team (DNF,DNF)
"After the warm up this morning I felt really confident. The Yamaha team worked really hard overnight last night and the bike I had today felt really good. Unfortunately we had a technical issue in race one when I felt I could have challenged for the podium. Once again in race two I fought hard in the early stages and had the pace to go for the podium. It just seems that luck isn't with me at the moment but I'm going to try and win a race in Magny Cours as it's a place that's always bought me luck."

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team Manager
"A really unusual race weekend, the wet Superpole yesterday meant a really back to front grid for today's two races. Fortunately we got a well earned podium with Cal in race two. He rode a fantastic second race and pushed very hard. He didn't have a great start but was catching the leaders when Haslam's technical failure caused some disruption which gave him an opportunity to move up. He fought on for the podium and I think it would have been impossible for him to do better. We leave Imola with mixed emotions, looking to improve our performance next week in Magny Cours."

MRS Racing Team rider Jeremy Guarnoni wrapped up a dominant season on his Yamaha YZF-R6 at Imola yesterday, claiming the 2010 Superstock 600 European Championship with one round still to run. The 17yr old French rider showed a maturity over the race weekend, qualifying fifth on the grid and running a steady race to come home in sixth place, ensuring his points lead meant he was untouchable going into his home race at Magny Course next week. The penultimate round of the championship yesterday saw no less than eight of the top ten riders across the finish line on Yamaha R6 Supersport bikes.

Guarnoni took ownership of the 2010 championship on his Yamaha R6 from the first race, taking victory at Portimao in the opening round, then adding a further four race wins to it, bringing his total to five from nine races. He heads to Magny Cours with 187 points at the top of the standings, 28 points clear of closest rival and fellow Frenchman Florian Marino.

"I'm very happy because I waited three years to win this title," said Jeremy Guarnoni. "The bike was really good, I work really well with Adrien Morillas to set up the bike and the whole team and Yamaha have worked really hard to get me here. I still want to win at Magny Cours but I have no pressure anymore, so I can race for fun there!"

"I am for sure really happy to win the title," said Adrien Morillas, MRS Racing Team Manager. "We knew already at the beginning of the year with Jeremy that we had a good chance to win the championship. The reward of winning is the perfect gift for the effort we put in. After five years working together the satisfaction is immense. Thank you to Yamaha Motor France and Yamaha Motor Europe for the help this season and we hope to continue to take Jeremy to the highest levels with Yamaha."

The European Superstock 600 Championship is the closest class of racing to production model bikes. Including this year's title, the close-to-production-model Yamaha YZF-R6 Supersport bike can now claim four of the last six European Superstock 600 titles, winning in 2010, 2008, 2007 and 2005.

Rain wrecks Imola Superpole chances for Crutchlow and Toseland

Yamaha Racing

QUALIFYING 2 REPORT 25/09/2010
Rain wrecks Imola Superpole chances for Crutchlow and Toseland
The first wet Superpole of the 2010 World Superbike Championship proved to be a disaster for most of the competing riders. The three heats saw a number of riders either crash out in the wet or run on at corners as they struggled to cope with the incredibly slippery Imola track surface.

Cal Crutchlow started the first heat well, clocking an impressive 2'09.2 to take the fastest slot, one of only two riders dropping under 2'11. He was unfortunately caught out in the second heat due to lack of heat in his full wet tyres, highsiding on a right hander which caught out several riders in the session. Having rejoined on his second bike with five minutes remaining Crutchlow was on track for a front row start when unfortunately he ran wide and lost time, relegating himself to the third row for tomorrow's two races. Team mate James Toseland struggled to find a fast pace in the wet in the first heat, dropping out of the top 16 in the last few seconds of the heat. He will start from the fifth row of the grid tomorrow.

"I'm a little bit sore after the crash but I'm not too worried about tomorrow's races. I think I know why I crashed; I had a cold tyre on the right hand side from not going fast enough on the out lap. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's races and we'll see how we get on."

"It's fair to say that rain has spoiled play today here at Imola, not just for me but for Cal also, so as a team we are very disappointed. We've had good top speed all weekend and good race pace and I was really looking forward to Superpole to see what we could do. I'm starting from the fifth row of the grid tomorrow but there have been other unlucky guys out there as well."

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Sterilgarda Word Superbike Team Manager
"Today was one of the most difficult Saturday's of the year; the rain has seriously compromised our qualifying practices and grid positions. For sure, the race will be hard for both riders and they will have to put in a lot of effort, especially at the beginning to try to catch the lead group. Having said that, both riders have good race pace and top speed so if they can achieve a good start they can challenge for the top five."
